Samuel Joseph DeLarso, Missing From Ocean City, NJ Since 2018

Samuel Joseph DeLarso went crabbing in Ocean City, Cape May County, New Jersey across from “dog beach” on October 20, 2018 at 5:00 a.m. He was never heard from again. He was 53 at the time of his disappearance.  His nicknames are “Sammy Swims With Fishes” and “The Tog King.”

Toll surveillance footage showed evidence of DeLarso heading to his destination.

DeLarso’s vehicle, a green Ford Expedition, was found by his son on West Newcastle Road in Ocean City. Inside the vehicle contained his crabbing and fishing gear.  DeLarso’s daughter believes that if he got swept away by a current, his cooler and gear would have still been on the beach.  None of his belongings were located on the beach.

DeLarso may have had one or two Zippo lighters (one black with eyes and another silver with a welded liberty silver dime) in his possession at the time of his disappearance. He may have disappeared with fishing gear in his pockets, sunglasses with a lanyard around his neck, and a black “Zen” cigarette holder.  He may have been wearing the following pieces of jewelry: a silver wedding band with copper wire on his left ring finger, a stud earring with a diamond in his left ear, a silver chain with a fishing hook charm, and a black watch.

At the time of DeLarso’s disappearance, he was possibly wearing blue denim jeans, a button-up dress shirt, and a t-shirt.  His socks may have been white or green.  He may have been wearing a baseball cap and a green fishing jacket.

Because DeLarso has an extreme sensitivity to light, also known as “photophobia,” he usually did not travel anywhere without his sunglasses, which he kept around his neck with a fabric lanyard.

Because DeLarso has extensive spinal issues, he was reliant on medication at the time of his disappearance.  The medication he took would wear off within about three hours.  He has not picked up his medication from his pharmacy since his disappearance.

DeLarso’s family contacted police, jails, and all nearby hospitals, to no avail.  

Authorities performed a thorough search for DeLarso, but it is believed that he did not make it back to land after presumably being in the water.

One witness came forward to say that they saw a man in the water on the day of DeLarso’s disappearance, but the man was never confirmed to be DeLarso.

➼ Height: 5’10”-6’2″, 200-225 lbs.  (His NamUs profile states he is 6’2″ in one section, but then in his NamUs bio it states he is 5’10”. So one of those was likely an error.)
➼ Pierced left ear.
➼ Complexion: Very tan.
➼Eye Color: blue / hazel
➼Hair color: brown and gray
➼ Scars:  He has a scar near his navel from an old surgery and a pump implant scar on his left side.  He also has a spinal scar from an old spinal surgery / infusion. He has cadaver bones in his spine.
➼ Dental: He wore both upper and lower dentures.
