Clayton Nobuo Onosaki Went Missing in Los Angeles, CA in 1978, And His Case Has Had Very Little Social Presence. Have You Seen Him?

January 9, 2022 — UNDERGROUND MYSTERIES

Clayton Nobuo Onosaki was a 20-year-old man with his whole life ahead of him when he suddenly vanished on Saturday, July 1, 1978 after leaving a letter for his mother, stating his intent to go out with his colleague in San Diego, California.  Onosaki did in fact meet up with his friend, but it is unclear what prevented his return home.  Not keeping his loved ones informed of his whereabouts was completely out of his character.

On the day of Onosaki’s disappearance, the weather was mild and pleasant, with a high temperature of 73°F, low winds, and no precipitation.  A baseball game of the Cincinnati Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers played earlier in the day at the Riverfront Stadium.  I searched through old newspaper articles from Los Angeles County to see if any major crimes took place that evening, but nothing significant grabbed my attention.

Born on October 27, 1957, Onosaki would be 64 years old if alive today, at the time that I am writing this publication. When he was last seen, he had black hair.  There is a chance that he would have gray or partially gray hair if alive today. His eyes are brown, and his height is unknown.  His NamUs profile lists his height as 5’10”, but other sources state he is 5’2″.  His race is Asian, specifically Pacific Islander, which denotes the Southeastern part of Asia, in Micronesia, Melanesia, or Polynesia (Hawaii, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga, Tahiti, and American Samoa).  I did a familial search on his surname, to find it originates in Japan.  His ancestors migrated from Japan to Honolulu, Hawaii.  Although Hawaii is part of the United States of America, many of its citizens are of Asian descent.  Onosaki was born in Hawaii, but he had moved to California as a child or young adult.

Onosaki’s race could be significant in the event that he is a John Doe and there is DNA being analyzed.  There is a chance identifying him (if he is a Doe) could prove challenging, since DNA tests are not and have not been readily available in many of these regions.  Therefore, even if his DNA is extracted (if deceased) and his DNA is placed into a familial DNA database, such as Gedmatch, there may not be many family matches, depending on how long his family has been in the USA and how much of his family entered the USA.  Hopefully Onosaki is alive, but there have not been any confirmed sightings of him since 1978.  The suddenness of his disappearance indicates he may have entered foul play.

Onosaki’s case was listed on www.NamUs.gov (the governmental database for missing people) in 2017.  The photos on this publication were featured on his NamUs profile.

Because Onosaki’s case has not received much representation, I created a Facebook page titled “Find Clayton Onosaki”, which you can view by clicking here, to help in his search.  I also formed a social media hashtag, #FindClaytonOnosaki.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Onosaki, please contact the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-275-5273.
