Missing Mother, Jerry Humes, of Memphis Tennessee, Was Last Seen in the 1990s, And Her Case Has Been Overlooked.

In June 2025, a troubling and largely unknown missing person case came to light through a post in the Facebook group “Birth parents and adopted children looking for their families.” The anonymous poster shared what may be the only known public account of this case.

According to the post, Jerry Humes has been missing since 1993 or 1994, when her son was just four years old. The family is originally from Memphis, Tennessee, and her son was reportedly born in 1989, making him 36 years old today.

The missing woman was born on June 23, 1970, and would be 55 years old as of the date of this publication. The spelling of her name is inconsistent across documents: her own birth certificate reportedly reads Jerry Humes, while her son’s birth certificate lists her as Jerri Humes. Her maiden name is Humes, and her stepfather is Carl Butler. Her mother is Cynthia Butler. Her biological father’s surname is believed to be Humes, but I do not know his first name.

The anonymous poster stated that the family attempted to file a police report in about 1996, three years after the disappearance, and they were informed that there was no prior record of Jeri/Jerry being reported missing. The family was reportedly told that there was no death certificate on file for her. A missing person report does exist, yet the case is not listed in NamUs, the national governmental database for missing persons in the United States, at the time of this publication. I will attempt to have her case added to NamUs.

The details surrounding Jerry Humes’ disappearance are unclear. She was reportedly last seen by a neighbor leaving her house in a vehicle. It is also unknown whether foul play was ever suspected or investigated.

Unfortunately, I do not have information on what Jerry Humes looked like. I searched for a yearbook photo on Classmates.com and on ancestral sites, but the photos I have seen of any Jerry Humes are not her.

Jerry Humes had reportedly struggled with homelessness and had been out of contact with her family at times. At the time of her disappearance, she and her son were living in an abandoned property. Her son went to school on his own.

This article marks the first known publication of this case. If anyone is working on forensic genealogy or investigating unidentified decedents with the surname Humes (or related family names Butler or Humes-Butler) from Tennessee, this record may offer a crucial clue.
