Lisa Ann Snyder Zerby Powell, Missing Since Sometime in the 1990s

Summary of the article below, for those who do not have the time to read in entirety: Lisa Ann (Snyder) Zerby Powell went missing from her family around 1991 when she was 31 years old. Lisa Ann (Snyder) Zerby Powell went missing from her family in her early thirties, sometime in 1991.  The circumstances behind her disappearance are mysterious.  The exact missing date is unknown. One of Snyder’s ex-husbands claims to have seen her in 1991.  Her other ex-husband last saw her in 1987 or 1988.  Her daughter has not seen her since 1987.  Snyder’s mother last saw her around 1988. Snyder has pubic records from Virginia Beach from 1993 and 1994. I will keep her “date missing” loose for this reason. Snyder may go by just Lisa Ann Snyder, or Lisa Zerby, or Lisa Powell, or possibly even another last name, if she has remarried. I reached out to Snyder’s daughter, and I have connected with her other family members and associates to recreate her time-line to paint a well-rounded story, in hopes it will bring forth any clues to her whereabouts.

Born on March 4, 1960, in Adrian, Michigan, to Gary Snyder and JoAnn Weatherford, Snyder faced some challenges in her childhood.  Her biological parents divorced when she was a young child.  Snyder was raised by her biological father, Gary, and her stepmother, Gary’s second wife, Linda.  Snyder was raised in the Baptist faith by her father and stepmother.  Her stepmother was extremely religious, but Snyder was rebellious in her transmitted religion. This rebellion caused some friction between Snyder and her stepmother.  Snyder’s biological mother was Catholic, and she felt as though she had been forced into a religion in which she did not believe.

Snyder’s siblings have not heard from her since around 1989.  Her brother, Budd Snyder, passed away last year.  She has another brother named David Snyder of Kentucky, who is in contact with her daughter. Snyder also has a sister named Donna Snyder (Major).  (All three of those siblings are Snyder’s full siblings.)  After Snyder’s biological mother, JoAnn, separated from Gary, she had two more children, which are half siblings to Snyder: Kathleen Goggin and Michael Goggin.  After Gary remarried, he had four more children, which are half siblings to Snyder: Jennifer, Rachel, Rebecca, and Andrew Snyder.  The Snyder family is originally from Adrian, Michigan, but most of them now live in Louisiana.  Snyder has nine siblings in total.

Snyder’s biological mother became estranged from her for several years. Snyder eventually searched for her mother and found her living in Anaheim, California with a new family she started with a man from Hawaii.  Snyder’s mother is now known as JoAnn Laca.  The last time JoAnn Laca physically saw Snyder was in 1988. Snyder’s step-aunt (sister of her stepmother) states that Snyder was always a “lost little girl” who craved the love from her biological mother.

Snyder’s family moved from Adrian, Michigan to Valparaiso, Indiana, where she spent most of her youth. She attended St. Paul’s Junior High School and subsequently Valparaiso High School, both of Valparaiso, Indiana. I have reached out to her old classmates, many of which remember her from both middle school and high school. They state she was in the class of 1979. Several classmates searched for her yearbook photo, to no avail. It is uncertain which grade she stopped attending high school; it is believed that may not have completed her high school studies.  Snyder gave birth to her son, David Eugene Rutledge Snyder, on May 22, 1979. She later married Victor Charles Zerby on July 3, 1980 in Valparaiso, Indiana when she was 20 years old.  Soon after, they had a daughter together.  Snyder’s son tragically passed away without her knowing.  Her daughter is desperate for answers and holds onto hope that she will be reunited with her mother.

Snyder faced some life struggles that led to her two children being cared for by her biological father and her stepmother. Snyder became estranged from her first husband, Victor Zerby. They separated, but they did not ever officially divorce. Snyder then met another man in 1985 whose last name is Powell, whom she married a few years later.

In 1986, Victor Zerby searched for Snyder and their two children.  He found Snyder living with Powell in Anaheim, California.  Victor Zerby took them to court to get custody rights, and she would not let him know where the children were. At that time, the children were staying with the grandparents in Gillette, Wyoming.  Victor Zerby made two attempts to find their children.  The first time he found his children, they were hidden by their grandparents in a van seat.  He was successful on his second attempt, as he arrived with a court order. 

In about 1989, Snyder moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, while Powell was residing in Glenview, Illinois. Powell traveled to Virginia to visit Snyder, and she eventually moved to Glenview to be with him. After several months of trying to work on their marriage, she went astray from Powell and moved back to Virginia Beach, to live with another man, who is believed to have been in the Navy. I found several public records to support that Snyder had resided at 1812 Cascade Court and 2700 Atlantic Avenue, both of Virginia Beach.

The last time that Powell spoke to Snyder was around 1991, when she reportedly signed the dissolution papers, which took place at a marketplace in Tustin, California, nearby where she used to reside. Prior to their meeting, Snyder had called Powell after learning his phone number. She was presumably already in the area in which Powell had been staying, in Orange County, California. Powell did not know why (or may not remember why) she was in the area. He believes she may have gone there to see her biological mother, but she insists she had not seen Snyder since the late 1980s. Powell was curious of Snyder’s intentions behind her phone call, as they had not talked to each other in a significant amount of time. Powell had been hoping to divorce Snyder, and he had previously believed that she needed to be present for a divorce, until he learned he can obtain a marriage dissolution. He realized he did not need her signature for the dissolution, but since she called him and asked to meet up, he brought the dissolution paperwork with him. Her signing the papers may have helped to give the process a sense of formality and closure. Their meeting was cordial, but she reportedly did not speak too much to Powell and was rather aloof. It is unknown if she left in a vehicle or by foot. I have spoken with Powell, and he is immensely helpful in the search for Snyder.  Unfortunately, due to so many years having passed, he can only vaguely recall some information about where Snyder may have gone after they parted ways. 

Snyder tried to gain custody of her two children in 1987.  She also allegedly attempted again in 1991, but her endeavor proved fruitless. Snyder’s biological mother stated that she received a phone call from Snyder from a Chicago hotel in 1991, and Snyder reportedly told her that she said had been staying at the hotel with some people, whose identities are unknown. Snyder gave her mother the main phone number to the hotel, but when she tried to call her back, the hotel staff did not know who she was or which room she was in, as her name may not have been listed on the room.

Snyder was allegedly facing addiction at the time of her disappearance.

Snyder’s daughter has a very sharp memory of events that happened when she was under the age of six.  She has held onto these memories, as she sensed the unusualness of her mother’s situation.

A missing persons report was not filed for Snyder when she went missing; she is an unreported person. Snyder’s daughter has tried to file a report, but a detective has not taken on her case.

Snyder’s daughter was too young to file a missing person’s report when she went missing, and because her mother did not have custody of her at the time, she did not even know her mother was missing from society.  She only knew that was that she was missing from her family.  In 1998, Snyder’s daughter called the Social Security Administration to see if they could provide any clues; she was unable to get information, because her social security number was supposedly still being used at the time.  It is unclear in which way(s) her social security number was being used. 

In the early 2000s, Snyder’s sister hired a private investigator, but there were no solid leads to her whereabouts.  The conclusion of the investigator’s search was that she was likely deceased or in witness protection, or that she traveled across the border to Mexico or Canada.

Online records for Lisa Ann Snyder Zerby Powell got tangled on the Internet with another Lisa Snyder from Pennsylvania, whom I researched; this often happens with online people-finders. 

Every available public record has been searched and analyzed. I went through every tenant who resided at her old addresses, and I reached out to all of them. Unfortunately, several of them are now deceased, but some gave me valuable information. Snyder has not had any interactions with any police departments in the towns in which she had previously resided. This was confirmed when I called each police department. Snyder’s family created a Facebook group in effort to find her. I also created a Facebook profile to reconnect with her old friends to search for clues and to create awareness of her case.

Maybe someone has seen Snyder or knows her in present day. Maybe she is using an assumed name or has even changed her name.  It helps to have a well-rounded picture, as every clue counts.  Snyder is about 5’1″, and she weighed about 100 pounds when she was last seen. She has a petite (small) frame.  Her race is Caucasian. She was known to dress fashionably.  She typically used to wear her hair really long, but she also got a pixie cut above her ears in the 1980s. She has reddish-brown (possibly auburn) hair and brown eyes. Her hair may have grayed by now, as she would be in her early sixties at the time I am writing this article.  Looking at her photos, it appears as though she may have some natural highlights and/or undertones in her hair.  She appears to have a wide or big smile. Snyder’s family remembers her having at least two tattoos. One tattoo is a set of wings, located above her breast. The other tattoo is a cross, located on her right hand, between her index finger and thumb.

Snyder was said to have a medical condition that would likely prevent her from having more children; although, with scientific advances, the possibility for her to have birthed another child is not far-fetched. She is said to have only one ovarian tube.

Another distinguishing characteristic that Snyder has is a curved spine. Her family member states that it is visibly curved. It is unknown if she has scoliosis. She also has a cesarean section scar on her abdomen.

One of Snyder’s passions is traveling.  Before she went missing, she was living semi-nomadically, traveling from place to place.  One of her family members describes her as “street smart”. Snyder also loved writing poetry.

Snyder’s case is not in NamUs as of the time I am writing this article. Hopefully, she will have a detective assigned to her case soon.  That way, her case may be approved into the NamUs database.  Without a NamUs profile or one of Snyder’s family member’s DNA in CODIS, it is difficult to compare her to a substantial amount of Jane Doe’s.  She can still be compared on a case-by-case basis, if there is a Jane Doe that seems to be a close fit. If Lisa is a Jane Doe, a match could still be found through genetic genealogy, especially considering Lisa’s daughter’s DNA is uploaded to Gedmatch; however, not all Doe cases have DNA in Gedmatch. Some Doe cases are not even in CODIS (the governmental source for DNA). It is good to cover both angles (having Snyder’s daughter’s DNA in CODIS as well as Gedmatch). Because Snyder’s familial DNA is not yet in CODIS, this avenue cannot be explored on a wide range. There is queue in unidentified remains being identified overall, but, fortunately, with the increase of sources and technology, the number of cases in the backlog is slowly dwindling.

Although Snyder’s daughter does not currently have DNA stored in CODIS, she did have a one-to-one DNA comparison done on the case of Lebanon Jane Doe of Boone County, Indiana. Lisa was excluded as a match.
