Columbus, Ohio — More than two decades have passed since Dottie Jo (Stewart) Cody was last seen in central Ohio, yet her disappearance remains unresolved. They hope to bring this case to the spotlight, in hopes someone has any clues to her whereabouts.
Dottie went missing in December of 1999 from Columbus, Ohio, where she was living at the time. She was 28 years old when she vanished. If she is alive today, she would be 55 years old. Her mother, Sharon “Sherrie” Yvonne Stewart Cantrell Boggs (born 1947), has spent years wondering what happened to her daughter. According to family and friends, Sharon reported Dottie missing at the time of her disappearance. There is no public information on her case at the time of this publication.
The circumstances behind Dottie’s disappearance are unclear. Her close friend believes that she saw her in late December of 1999, possibly a few days before Christmas, at the 600th block of South Ogden Avenue in Columbus. Dottie was reportedly overtly upset the last time she was seen by her friend.
I first learned about Dottie’s disappearance in an unusual way: through a vague comment left by one of her friends on an Facebook post regarding an unrelated missing person. The comment mentioned an unnamed woman who had been missing for decades and that no report had ever been made. I reached out privately to that friend, and together we began piecing the story back together. She shared Dottie’s name and basic background, and I began researching public records to uncover additional details. As the investigation expanded, I located a Facebook post written by Dottie’s nephew, who expressed hope that she could one day be found — and uncertainty about whether a missing person case actually existed, despite his grandmother’s belief that one had been filed. When I shared that discovery with Dottie’s friend, she connected directly with the nephew. I also encouraged her to publicly share Dottie’s story, which she did. Until that point, Dottie’s case had no online presence, no centralized case summary, and no searchable missing-person profile. My goal is to change that — to document her case, preserve the known facts, and spread awareness. Somehow this case slipped through the cracks for decades; I hope to change that. This news article serves as the first public missing person profile, research on her disappearance, and first announcement on her disappearance to a media site, besides a post made by her nephew and friend to Facebook. After talking to Dottie’s friend, she called the police department, and an officer confirmed that there is in fact a police report on her disappearance.
Dottie’s friends have been her leading advocates in her disappearance. We have collectively been trying to piece together the details of her case, to establish and recreate her timeline. They have gathered extensive data and corroborated many details.
Born on February 28, 1970, Dottie Jo (Stewart) Cody can be described as a Caucasian female who has curly dark brown hair (usually with bangs). Her hair color may have grayed by now. Her height is estimated to be at about 5’5″ to 5’6″. Her weight was approximated to be at 120 pounds when she was last seen. She has hazel or brown eyes. One of her friends recalls a solid period / dot tattoo in black Indian ink on the outer side of an unspecified wrist. It is said that Dottie had two C-sections. One outstanding trait, according to her friend, is that she had very shiny, pearly white teeth.
Aside from Columbus, Dottie has also lived in Hilliard and Plain City, both of Ohio.
Dottie was married at the time of her disappearance. Friends acknowledge that Dottie engaged in recreational drug use in the past but stress that she was not an addict.
Dottie is a mother of four children. According to her friend, “Her children were her life.” After her disappearance, three of her children were raised by family, and one child was adopted. Her son tragically passed away never knowing what happened to his mother. Those closest to Dottie do not believe she would have voluntarily abandoned her children, and they remain deeply concerned for her well-being.
